How to Get Healthy Hair Without Compromising Your Hair

Check out different articles on how to get healthy hair and you will read some tips on keeping your hair trimmed, being careful of sun damage, and more helpful pointers. However, did you realize that the products you are putting on your hair could be damaging to your overall health? Or did you ever stop to think that the statement "you are what you eat" could be extrapolated to include "you are what you put on your skin and hair, too"?
It is true that your skin absorbs the products that you put on it. Think of estrogen patches to be applied to the skin or nicotine patches to help you stop smoking. These products are living proof that you absorb chemicals through your skin. You think that your skin is a barrier to toxins, but it is rather a carrier. In fact, toxins which enter your body through your mouth (on the food you eat) are subjected to the enzymes in your saliva and stomach which can break them down and reduce their harm to your body. They are also passed through the liver and the kidneys and are detoxified a bit more.
But toxins that enter your body through your skin bypass the liver and the stomach enzymes and go directly into the bloodstream and tissues with no other protection to reduce their harm. In fact, the carcinogen called nitrosodiethanolamine (NDELA), an ingredient often found in shampoos, was shown to have 100 times higher absorption rate through the skin than through the mouth at a report given to a congressional hearing in 1978.
Be selective in the products you choose to put on your hair because you want to get healthy hair while achieving beautiful hair you feel good about. Shampoos and conditioners are full of petrochemicals, many of which are known to cause skin and eye irritation and allergic reactions. Watch out for dioxane, anything with paraben as part of the word, propylene glycol, MSG. Some dandruff shampoos contain coal tar which is a known human carcinogen. Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) are surfactants (sudsing agents). They have been found in lab studies to cause severe epidermal changes in the skin of mice. Formaldehyde has been shown to potentially cause cancer. Avoid hair care products with these & other harmful chemicals.
Use natural, organic hair care products for healthy hair and a healthy body. A high-quality, organic hair care product should contain a blend of ten vitamins, minerals, and herbs that provides the optimal environment for healthy, thick, and vibrant hair. But the best part is that there are no harsh chemicals that can enter your scalp and compromise your health.
Your hair is an outward indication of your health. It's amazing how the way your hair looks affects how you feel about yourself. Ensuring it looks good goes much deeper than a trip to the salon. Invest in healthy hair care choices, and you will have more than a good hair day - you'll get healthy hair along with a healthy body. And, as you and I both believe, your health is your wealth!

HOW TO STOP HAIR DAMAGE AND START HAVING HEALTHY HAIR

Beauty store shelves are full of products promising you healthy, shiny hair. However, the fact is that you don't have to change your diet or your shampoo to get the best out of your hair. Your hair follicles are doing the hard bit already, growing hair. The rest is down to you, simply looking after your hair as it lengthens, keeping it conditioned and protecting it from damage. In this article learn how your hair gets damaged and what you can do to prevent it so your hair can stay its natural, healthy best.
How does hair get damaged?
Our hair, generally speaking, consists of two parts: the cortex (and in some women, also the medulla) at the centre, and the cuticle. The cortex is a very fragile structure made of long stringy proteins, porous like a sponge, that contains the elements that give your hair most of the qualities that are unique to you: strength, colour, elasticity and texture. This delicate material needs protecting, and that is the job of the cuticle. Split ends are actually where the cuticle has completely broken away, uncovering the unravelling end of your cortex. No product in the world is going to glue your split ends permanently back together. This is why the only cure for split ends is a hair cut, followed by a good hair care routine that maintains and protects the cuticle.
The cuticle is a series of layers (usually about seven) of scales made of the protein keratin, which overlap like roof tiles. This arrangement allows the hair to swell and shrink with moisture content. These scales are there to take a beating, and when we talk about damaging your hair, we are talking about damage to these cuticle scales. These scales are not living. They cannot grow back or repair themselves. Once you have blown through all the layers of the cuticle, there is nothing left to protect the cortex, the damage is irreversible and the hair breaks. As far as you and I are concerned, care of the cuticle is the very foundation of maintaining healthy hair.
The Four Most Common Causes of Damage
Chemicals.
Colouring and perming chemicals do the most damage, because the way they work is by swelling the hair to such an extent that the cortex can be altered, either by changing the pigment when you colour it, or by chemically destroying the sulphur bonds that give your hair its naturally curly or straight texture. This process roughs up the edges of all the scales right through the entire cuticle, not just the outside.
For this reason, in my opinion, all hair colouring, relaxing and perming should be done by a trained stylist and not at home. You only want to subject your hair to this process once, and thereafter only touch up from the roots. You should only do either a perm or a colour process if you have fine hair, but never both.
A good professional hairstylist will never agree to do both procedures to fine hair. Ideally, for really healthy hair, you should not subject your hair to any chemical treatment at all.
But it's fun and a lot of women don't like their hair going grey, so there are good reasons to colour or perm your hair. And if you decide you've had enough with the chemicals, you can just grow your hair out and start again.
So don't believe any company that tells you they have a gentle colouring or perming product. There is no such thing. And conditioning afterwards will not reverse the damage.
Friction.
Even if you are quite saintly and never colour or perm your hair, most of the damage to your cuticle is caused by the hairs rubbing against each other. This is where your good conditioning habits will pay dividends.
Friction includes wearing your hair down loose, especially on a windy day, brushing, back combing or teasing and just 'messing' with your hair too frequently during the day. If you find your hair knots or tangles frequently, this is a typical sign of damage to the cuticle. The scales are literally ruffled up and catching on each other, causing your hair to snarl.
To minimise damage while getting the tangles out of your hair, never brush your hair when it is wet, even with conditioner in it. Use your fingers and waggle them as you very gently comb them through your hair. Your hands are the best grooming tool you possess, as the skin on your hands cannot damage your cuticle.
To further protect your hair during the day, the best thing you can do is use very good quality hair accessories to wear your hair up. The kindest type of accessories to use are the ones that do not bind your hair at all, such as combs, forks and hair sticks. Another great way to protect your hair when you are outside is to tuck it up into a hat.
The next best alternative, if your hair is too slippery, are either very fat hair elastics or hair claws which have smoothed and polished edges. Lastly, barrettes and hair slides can cut into the hair's cuticle. To prevent this, choose barrettes using only the best clasps which are still only made in France from steel with hand smoothed edges.
The good news is that very good quality French hair accessories, while expensive, should last for several years, so are actually good value as well as kind on your hair.
Heat.
Styling using straighteners, curling tongs and blow dryers causes quite a lot of damage. Hair dryers can actually strengthen hair, but only when used on a medium or low heat and held at least six inches away from your hair. Most people use dryers as a way to straighten their hair, though, and this causes a lot of damage.
What happens when using these tools on wet or damp hair is that the water in the cortex of the hair can start to boil and the steam will actually blow holes in the cuticle? There are products that claim to "heat protect" your hair. They can do a little, but as most women use driers and irons on a high setting combined with pulling their hair straight with brushes, this is more than these "heat protecting" products can stand up to.
My recommendation is to learn to work with your natural hair texture. This can be a steep learning curve. All hair textures have their own unique advantages, the most valuable of which is that when you respect your hair's natural tendencies and ensure that it is kept healthy and undamaged, you spend almost no time styling it in the morning.
Sun.
UV rays affect your hair in two ways. UVA rays gradually break down the pigment molecules in your hair leaving a yellowish tinge inside the hair, which is why sun faded hair can look brassy. UVB rays, after a lot of exposure, break down the sulphur bonds in your hair, which eventually affects the strength and texture of your hair.
However, this is really only relevant if you spend a lot of time outdoors when the sun is most intense, use sunbeds very frequently or live in a very sunny country. Hair styling products containing sunblock are not effective. They either wash out or fall out of your hair very easily.
You only really need to be concerned about sun damage if you colour your hair, have naturally white or grey hair, or if you have longer than shoulder-length hair. To protect your hair colour, the only effective solution is a hat or scarf. For long hair, it is helpful to wear your hair up in a chignon, pleat or twist style so that the ends of your hair are covered and secure.
Protecting your hair from damage is the single best way to have healthy looking hair. Fortunately this is completely free. The more disciplined you are about looking after your hair, your hair will reward you by not only behaving more often on a day to day basis, but by also responding well to more extreme styling when you need it for those formal occasions.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR HAIR SOFT: 5 NATURAL WAYS

Google PlusReddit

Dry, frizzy hair can be one of your worst nightmares. We know how hard it can be to battle brittle hair or even think about stepping out on a bad hair day but not anymore.

Regular hair-drying, pollution or overexposure to the sun, these are just some of the reasons that can make your hair dry. Besides this, some people may have naturally dry hair. The first step to bring back your hair’s shine and moisture is to identify the cause and then work to repair the damage. The hair gets moisture from the roots. Therefore, avoid doing anything that makes your scalp dry especially during winters.

The good thing is that you don’t always have to depend on expensive salon treatments. Fortunately, there are few natural ways to bring your locks back to life. Here are some great ingredients you will find right in your kitchen and how to use them as suggested by Ragini Mehra, Founder, Beauty Source.

1. Egg and Yogurt Mask - If you have dull and lifeless hair in winters then yoghurt and egg white is the perfect solution for you. Eggs can be a great source of protein for your hair while soothing yoghurt can help reverse hair damage caused by product build-up and air pollution.

2. Coconut Milk, Avocado and Jojoba Oil Hair Mask - Coconut milk is rich in protein, very high in fats, making it great for moisturizing and strengthening. Avocado is rich in fatty acids making it very moisturizing for your hair. Jojoba oil promotes hair growth. Mix the three for shiny tresses.

3. Milk and Honey - Use a half to a full cup of milk (at room temperature) and add either one or 2 big tablespoons of honey. Allow it about an hour to work and then rinse it off using my regular shampoo. This wonderful pack won’t weigh your hair down or make it greasy but give it wonderful shine and softness instead.

4. Papaya Mask -Dandruff is a common problem in winters because of a dry scalp. Papaya prevents balding as helps boost hair growth by strengthening the roots as well as controls dandruff. Mix together 1 skinned papaya with 1/2 cup of plain yoghurt. Let it sit for 45 minutes before you rinse it out.

5. Apple cider Vinegar, Honey and Almond Oil: Apple cider vinegar acts as a great conditioner. Mix two tablespoons of honey with one tablespoon of almond oil and one tablespoon apple cider vinegar. Rub this mix all over your tresses gently focusing on the dry, damaged bit and ends. Leave it on for at least half an hour and then rinse off.

Oiling your hair regularly is a secret that all girls with great hair know. Massage oil into your hair, section by section starting from the scalp to the ends and then pack in a warm towel for 15-20 minutes. Oil locks in extra moisturizer hydrate hair in the cold weather and gives you soft and shiny locks. Natural oils are such as coconut, olive, castor and almond oil are great for restoring shine and moisture to the hair.

Your Hair Will Grow Like Crazy With These 5 Tips! (With Pictures)

This is a great video with 5 tips on how to have longer and thicker hair.  I agree with the 5 tips 100% It is for every texture and I always believe in maintaining healthy hair because then you can enjoy the length. If these tips stimulate growth then that will be an added bonus!!  Please let me know your thoughts!!

Secret of Balanced Diet for Healthy Hair

Food is important for the health and growth of your hair as well, like all other body parts. The only difference is that you have to supply the food to the hair follicles before the hair strand grows since once it grows out it is nothing but a dead cell and nothing can make the hair thicker or straighter or healthier. But a healthy diet can keep the hair follicles nourished and the scalp healthy thus preventing hair fall and other various ailments that cause hair fall.
Just like your skin, your hair shows damage through dieting too. Just that the skin shows immediately and the hair to show the extent of damage would take longer. But nevertheless, a crash dieting or an unhealthy lifestyle would surely take a toll on your hair too along with your skin.
Causes of Unhealthy Hair:
There are also many other reasons for unhealthy hair too like,
1.     Excessive Smoking
2.     Excessive Alcohol Consumption
3.     Unclean Hair regularly etc.,
But maintaining a Healthy Diet throughout would help in combating these much more effectively than any cosmetic products ever can.
There are many foodstuffs that can help with Healthy Hair Growth. Taking just any food that is regarded as healthy will not help. You have to know exactly, what ingredients favour in the building block of healthy hair. In which food you would get these ingredients. You have to then include these foods in your daily diet plan. For instance, protein is the most important ingredient that aids in healthy hair growth. The reason is that the hair strand is mostly made of protein and hence a protein-rich diet would ensure that your hair stand is strong such that it does not break easily.

List of Protein Rich Foods:
1.     Whole Eggs
2.     Almond
3.     Oats
4.     Cottage Cheese
5.     Greek Yogurt
6.     Milk
7.     Broccoli
8.     Tuna
9.     Quinoa
10. Lentils
11. Pumpkin Seeds
12. Turkey Breast
13. Fish (All Types)
14. Shrimp
15. Brussels Sprouts
16. Peanuts
The healthy scalp is necessary for healthy hair too and for a healthy scalp, you would need a diet rich in Iron, Vitamin E and some essential Minerals like Copper, Selenium and Magnesium. Vitamin D is also important. You would get Vitamin D through the sunlight but remember that too much sunlight can damage the hair instead of supplying it with vitamin D. For protein, minerals and vitamin E, you should take ample amounts of fishes like Salmon, Eggs, Leafy Vegetables like Spinach as well as Lentils too.
It is important though that you consult a good Doctor first before taking all the above-mentioned food at once. Your doctor can plan out a Balanced Diet for you.

Healthy hair

This article applies to all types of hair and textures.  So enjoy and learn from it!!
Every day most people shed around 50 to 100 hairs, but with over 100,000 hairs in the scalp, this amount of hair loss generally doesn't lead to any noticeable thinning or loss of scalp hair. However, some people may experience more severe hair loss on their head, and possibly all over their body. While this may not be much of a concern to some, for others hair loss can be devastating and life-changing.
There are a number of reasons why hair can fall out, become thin or start to look unhealthy. Genetics, hormonal factors, medical conditions and medications can all play a part, while evidence suggests lifestyle factors can also be a cause. Nutritional deficiencies and emotional stress, in particular, are thought to have a significant impact on healthy hair.
This factsheet will explore what causes hair loss and how including specific nutrients in your diet could be key to keeping hair healthy and strong.
On this page
·         What causes hair loss?
·         How is hair loss treated?
·         Eating for healthy hair
What causes hair loss?
The reasons for hair loss in men and women will vary, but there tend to be several common causes that affect both sexes.
Hormonal imbalances
Hormones are largely responsible for many types of hair loss, particularly male and female pattern baldness, hair loss during pregnancy and after the menopause.
Medical conditions and illnesses
Thyroid problems, scalp infections, and other skin disorders such as lupus can trigger hair loss. The good news is once the underlying infection is treated, hair will grow back.
Medications
Healthy hair can be affected by certain medications prescribed to patients undergoing treatment for conditions such as heart problems, cancer, depression, arthritis and high blood pressure. This type of hair loss tends to be temporary.
Genetics
Female and male pattern baldness are common in people with very high levels of a certain male hormone. This is a hereditary problem, therefore if members of your close family have experienced hair loss and thinning, there is a high chance you may too.
Physical and emotional stress
Some people who have experienced an intense physical shock or emotional stress may start to experience hair thinning and hair loss. This is because trauma can shock the hair growth cycle and push more hair into the shedding phase rather than the growth phase. This type of hair loss is typically referred to as telogen effluvium and mainly affects the scalp.
Lack of protein
Hair is around 91% protein. Protein is made up of long amino acid chains called polypeptides, which are found in the cortex (middle part) of the hair. The amino acids consist of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and sulphur and are the building blocks of nails and skin. As a result, a diet lacking in protein can shut down hair growth and lead to lacklustre, weaker locks.
Nutrient deficiency
A lack of iron and zinc can lead to hair loss because these minerals are essential for helping hair follicles to grow. Therefore, people who are anaemic may find their hair becomes weaker and thinner.
How is hair loss treated?
Medical treatment
If you are worried about your hair loss and it is causing you distress, you should consider making an appointment with your GP to discuss possible treatment options. If you have a specific medical condition that is causing your hair loss, your GP will be able to make a diagnosis and recommend medications to resolve this.
In terms of common types of hair loss such as male and female pattern baldness, medications such as finasteride and Minoxidil can be used for cosmetic reasons. However, these treatments don't work for everyone and will only show effects for as long as they are taken. There are surgical options for hair loss, but these can be expensive as they are not available on the NHS.
Healthy hair diet
Another option worth considering when tackling hair loss and hair thinning is nutrition. There is evidence to suggest that a diet rich in specific nutrients can strengthen new hair and help prevent hair loss and weakness.
Studies that focus on the effects of diet on hair primarily involve factors such as protein malnutrition, eating disorders and starvation. While a specific diet for healthy hair may not be helpful for types of hair loss caused by medical conditions or genetics, it is considered valuable for those who have experienced hair loss as a result of nutritional deficiencies - such as low levels of protein. In these circumstances, a nutritionist can devise a healthy hair diet plan consisting of certain foods and that may be able to encourage stronger regrowth.
Eating for healthy hair
Eating a nutritionally balanced diet is key for good health, and when our bodies are healthy so is our hair. If you are experiencing hair loss and thinning, we have outlined a guide below on eating for healthy hair, and how to address any nutritional deficiencies, which may be connected with your type of hair loss.
Protein deficiency
As hair is made mostly of protein, eating a diet that contains sufficient levels of protein is considered essential for keeping hair healthy, strong and growing naturally. A deficiency can lead to thin, brittle hair or hair loss.

The top recommended protein-packed foods for healthy hair include:
·         Oily fish - Salmon, herring, mackerel, sardines and trout are packed with protein and good fats (omega-3 fatty acids) that contribute towards hair shine and strength, and help to prevent breakage. The NHS recommends eating at least two portions of oily fish a week.
·         Nuts - Offering a great range of nutritional benefits, nuts are one of the best foods for healthy hair. They offer a rich source of zinc and omega-3 fatty acids as well as protein, which can help to improve the overall look of hair (especially Brazil nuts, almonds and walnuts).
·         Eggs - One of the best sources of protein you can find, eggs can boost the growth rate and strength of hair. Eggs also contain B-vitamins, which can boost hair shine.
·         Beans and lentils - Packed with protein, zinc and biotin - a vitamin B complex necessary for hair growth - beans and lentils should form an important part of a healthy hair diet.
·         Dairy products - Milk, yoghurt and cheese are rich in protein as well as calcium, which also contributes to hair growth and thicknessAim to have around two to three portions of dairy a day.
·         Chicken - Containing high levels of protein as well as healthy hair nutrients zinc, iron and B vitamins. Zinc promotes the hair growth and repair and normalises the production of oil around the hair follicles. If your diet is deficient in zinc this can reduce the overall thickness of your hair and lead to hair loss.
Vitamins and minerals
A healthy hair diet should consist of plenty of fruit and vegetables, which contain vitamins and minerals to help keep the scalp healthy and prevent the hair follicles from thinning. Spinach and other green leafy vegetables such as broccoli, kale and Swiss chard are good sources of iron, beta carotene, folate, and vitamin C which help keep hair follicles healthy and scalp oils circulating.
Vitamin C is particularly beneficial for aiding circulation to the scalp and supporting the tiny blood vessels that feed the follicles. A lack of vitamin C can lead to hair breakage, so include the following in your diet to up your intake:
·         citrus fruits (oranges, limes, lemons, grapefruit)
·         peppers
·         broccoli
·         sweet potatoes
·         kiwi
·         Brussels sprouts.
The daily recommendation for adults is 40mg vitamin C per day unless you are a smoker or under constant stress or training a lot, then you should double the intake. Please consult a health professional if you are considering taking a supplement, as taking more than 1000mg a day could lead to stomach pain, flatulence and diarrhoea.
Iron deficiency

Iron helps make red blood cells, which carry oxygen around the body. Without sufficient oxygen, the hair bulb may not be able to create new hair cells, therefore slowing the hair growth. Iron-rich foods that may in some cases help with the prevention of hair loss or thinning include:
·         red meat
·         nuts
·         beans
·         dried fruit
·         dark leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale and watercress
·         wholegrains.
